Week of August 28th-30th

Good afternoon parents,

I hope you all had a great weekend. Last week we began to brainstorm people and places that are important to us and listed them in our writers’ notebooks. We choose one person and brainstormed some small moments we had with that person. From there we talked to a buddy about our favorite small moment with that person and they asked us some clarifying questions. Then we began to write fast and furious, trying to capture that small moment. Students continued to show that reading is thinking by stopping and jotting while reading their books. We also continue to talk about just right books and why it is important to read books that fit us! We continue to build classroom community!

This week will begin on a Day 6. Our class will have Library checkout on Monday and a lesson on Friday this week!

After School Activities (ASA's) begin on Monday. Please check your email for a detailed email from Gail Smith regarding your child's ASA. 

Home Learning- This will be our first week for home learning, students will bring home a notebook on Monday and they should return it on Friday to share with the class (keep it fun!).

The MAP test (Measure of Academic Progress) will be on Tuesday and Thursday morning this week for grade three. Please make sure your child gets a good night's rest and arrives at school on time. We will be starting the test first thing in the morning on those two days.

Reading

Students will begin to set clear reading goals such as the number of pages read during independent reading time and track their progress towards these goals. Students will also continue to build up their reading stamina, as well as talk about and reflect on what they are reading.

I asked students to have you take a picture of them reading in their favorite place at home and send it to me. If you could do that by Wednesday that would be great! I have already received some by email so keep them coming.

Writing

Students will learn about the importance of writing about small moments and continue to develop a bank of writing ideas of small moments to draw from during this unit. Students will also begin to learn that writers use descriptive details of movement, sounds, actions, etc. to show the story rather than tell it.

Students also brought home their writers’ notebook this weekend to decorate it with pictures, words and or phrases. Please have them bring them to school tomorrow. If they didn’t get a chance to do it this weekend they can bring it home next weekend to complete.

Math

Students will continue to practice time to the nearest minute as well as solve elapsed time word problems. One strategy is to use a number line with the start and end time.

Social Studies

Students will learn how to use map keys and the compass rose to interpret and gain information from various maps.
